Exterior Painting Process
(Specific steps may vary but here’s our typical game plan!)
Pressure Washing & Cleaning
- Apply a biodegradable cleaner to break down dirt, mould, and buildup.
- Use a pressure washer to remove dirt and any loose paint.
- Rinse windows and fixtures to ensure no residue is left behind.
- Pick up and properly dispose of paint chips.
- Upon request (and if noted in the contract), we can clean concrete and/or decks.
- Allow the home to fully dry before moving to the next step.
Surface Preparation
- Scrape or wire brush flaky paint to create a smooth foundation.
- Feather sand edges of existing paint for a seamless transition between the painted surface and raw substrate.
- Spot prime or fully prime (depending on the condition of the surface) using Bond Primer.
- Caulk expansion gaps, corners, windows, and siding joints (for cedar siding, we caulk where two pieces meet).
- Once preparation is complete, we’re confident in the quality of the work, which allows us to provide a written warranty.
Protecting Your Home
- Mask off unpainted surfaces using plastic and paper.
- Cover decks, patios, furniture, and driveways to prevent overspray.
- Mask light fixtures for a clean, polished result.
Exterior Painting
- Apply paint by brush and roll or spray, depending on the project scope.
- If spraying on porous surfaces (like cedar), we back brush/back roll to push the paint into the wood fibres for better adhesion.
- Two coats applied upon request or when recommended.
- In cooler temperature, we stop painting at least 2 hours before sunset to prevent surfactant leaching.
Clean-Up & Final Inspection
- Daily job site clean-up to keep the area organized.
- Collect and remove all garbage.
- Pick up any remaining paint chips.
- Remove plastic, tape, and coverings.
- Reinstall any hardware or furniture moved for the project.
Final Walk-Through:
- Coordinate a time with the client for a final inspection on the last day.
- Complete any touch-ups before packing up.
- Once the client is satisfied, the contract is signed, and they are invited to leave us a Google Review.
